The Speech and Debate clubs at Hitchin Boys School exist to foster, nurture, and develop not only oracy and public speaking skills but, most importantly, the critical reasoning and active listening skills that are universally prized across all careers-many of the boys, including the Captain for the last two years will be STEM specialists who find it hugely beneficial and complimentary to their "hard sciences" study, that is to say, it really is for everyone.
It is a very active society, meeting on Fridays and Wednesdays at Lunchtime and entering a minimum of 10 competitions a year including the Oxford Union, Cambridge Union, Durham Union and ESU Mace. We also enter the boys into the England Debate squad trials. Each competition comes with an entry fee and incurs travel costs- your contributions or "subs" are instrumental in ensuring debate continues to grow and flourish at HBS. Thank you in advance.
