Duke of Edinburgh Expedition-23 to 24 May 2018

Dear Parent/Guardian, 18/04/2018

Your son/daughter has been selected to attend the first of the practice expeditions as part of their Duke of Edinburgh's Award. The practice expedition will take place in and around Epping Forest with an overnight camp at Gilwell Park Scout Camp on the 23rd to 24th of May 2018 during the Enrichment fortnight. Students will be expected to arrive at school at the normal time of 8:30am, where they will pack their rucksack and equipment before setting off for the expedition.

Students will be accompanied on the first day of the expedition by staff that will support them through the day ensuring that the students have a full understanding of the expedition requirement's as well as putting into practice the training they received throughout last term. On the second day, students will be monitored from a distance to ensure they feel as though they are taking full responsibility for their expedition and getting to the checkpoints. This is normal practice to ensure that students work together and communicate effectively in decision making as part of a team.

There will be a £10 fee for each student to cover the camping. Please make payment to the school's wise pay account under DofE Expedition.

Please see attached equipment list that your child will need to bring with them for the expedition.

The school will provide the following:

Rucksack
Tent
Sleeping bag
Sleeping bag liner
Sleeping matt
Waterproof Jacket
Waterproof trousers
Cooking Stove
Cooking Gas

Equipment students must bring with them for the expedition:

Clothing:

One complete change of clothes for the expedition.

1 x pyjamas (or whatever you like to sleep in)
1 x socks
1 x underwear
1 x tracksuit bottoms
1 x top (take into account the weather conditions)
1 x T-shirt
1 x warm lightweight jacket (take into account the weather conditions)
1 x towel (students can shower at the campsite or just wash)
1 x toilet bag (soap/shower gel, toothbrush, toothpaste etc.)
1 x spare trainers (students should wear trainers/boots for walking in, not school shoes)
1 x set of cutlery
1 x plastic/paper plate
2 x black plastic bin liner
1 x torch

Food:

Students will be required to cook whilst on expedition, boiling water to pour into a Pot Noodle does not constitute cooking, so please do not send your child with Pot Noodles.

2 x packed lunch (one for each day)
1 x breakfast (this can be pots of porridge or cereal bars)
1 x evening meal (Pasta and sauce is light weight, nutritional and quick to cook)

Snacks like chocolate or energy bars are good to keep them going throughout the days walking. They will need these little things to keep them going but please don't give them too much as they will never sleep in the evening.

Things NOT to bring

Hunting knives, Pen Knives, laser pens, music systems, speakers, fizzy drinks, expensive personal belongings like jewellery, Sunday best clothing etc.

Please feel free to contact Mr Ross if you have any questions or concerns regarding the expedition. Your son/daughter will be away overnight, so enjoy the peace and quiet for one evening and let me take the strain.

Regards,

Mr Ross
